Selection, Training, and Control Problems in the Use of the Military Working Dog.

Abstract

A report is made of operant conditoning procedures used in the determination of auditory, olfactory and visual acuity measures in the German Shepherd. An account is given of a procedure for semi-automatic training of dogs to search for, detect, and objectively report specified odors. The procedure for training Shepherds to search for, detect, and objectively report odorous substances shows that they can acquire the essentials of this performance in less than 20 hours--an impressive savings in time compared to conventional techniques.
