Machine Independence - The Problem of Portability.
Abstract
Computer program portability is a measure of the effort which must be expended when transferring a program from one environment to another. Historically, there have been several approaches to portability, but most have met with little success. The problems of portability are presented, along with techniques available to computer programmers to solve or alleviate those problems. Concurrent with this study, a portable preprocessor/editor was designed. The preprocessor/editor was intended to give FORTRAN users a machine-independent means of character output and provide a simple editor for text manipulation. (Author)
