Spectrophotometric Determination of Copper at Low Levels in Fresh or Saline Water. Determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) Employing Ceric Ion as Oxidant.

Abstract

An accurate spectrophotometric method has been developed for determination of copper in fresh or saline waters. The method uses the orange colored complex formed by Cu(I) and Bathocuproine and it may be used where the concentration of copper is as low as one part per billion (ppb). A modification of the standard method for determination of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is proposed using ceric iron as the oxidant. The method which is described reduces the refluxing time from two hours to one-half hour and enables the analyst to determine COD values in saline waters where the chloride ion concentration is as high as 12,500 ppm without using a correction factor.
