Biomedical Applications of Stochastic Processes
Abstract
The report is a nonmathematical paper intended for sophisticated but otherwise nonmathematical readers. The paper starts with the emphasis on stochastic models in Biology and Medicine which, because of the large variability among observations in these areas, are considered more appropriate than their deterministic analogs. Again, owing to the basic evolutionary characteristics of living things such as births and deaths, growth and decay etc., one is led in biology and medicine to many dynamic processes of development in time and space. Consequently, the use of stochastic processes for model-building for the study of various biological phenomena becomes quite natural. The paper attempts to describe nonmathematically some of the special processes, which have emerged useful models in biology and medicine over a period of time.
