Foil Bearing Investigation. Study of Tape Behavior in Vacuum Columns. Analysis of the Contour of a Stationary Tape in Vacuum Columns.

Abstract

The contour of a stationary, infinitely wide thin foil in a vacuum column is analyzed. It is shown that for the case of greatest practical interest the analysis must take into account the bending rigidity of the foil. The analysis is carried out by assuming the tape contour to be a small perturbation from a prescribed reference contour. Conditions for the foil to lift off the wall, to form point-contact or line-contact with the wall, are studied for a range of geometric and elastic parameters. (Author)
