Field Results with an Automated Reticle Geodetic Theodolite.

Abstract

For several years, AFCRL has been experimenting with the concept of using electro-optical devices to make impersonal observations of stars. Currently under test is an instrument that uses photomultiplers located behind alternate opaque - and transparent-lined reticles to receive the light energy from the observed source. The instrument automatically records the passage of stars crossing the field of view, relative to accurate time and level information. One application of this technique is the development of a reference azimuth based on precisely timed star observations across the azimuth reticle coupled with an equally precise knowledge of when the star crosses the zero elevation reticle.
