Guidelines for the Acquisition of Software Packages.

Abstract

Many decisions dealing with computer software systems involve the potential acquisition of packages for a specific or limited general purpose nature. Guidelines for acquisition are presented here which stress the implementation feasibility of such packages. This reflects the behavior that operational considerations not only impact the cost of a package but also are neglected in favor of traditional cost/benefit analysis. The use of the guidelines in the areas of operations management, computer systems management, and accounting are discussed. (Author)
