Emerson Mixed-Gas Scuba: Preliminary Evaluation of the Flow Characteristics of the Prototype Regulator-Orifice Unit.

Abstract

The study evaluates the prototype model of a mixed-gas scuba regulator-orifice unit for use as a component part of a standard U.S.N. mixed-gas scuba. The unit's stability over long time flow and its reproducibility after frequent shut downs was found to be satisfactory; its flow characteristic as a function of bottle pressure, particularly at low pressure, was found to be barely satisfactory with improvement desirable. The flow characteristics (constant-mass-flow with increasing depth) very nearly meet USN standards for both percentile error and range of constant-mass-flow, with minor discrepancies in range at low flows. The unit appears to be promising and is recommended for continued development. (Author)
