Ultrasonic Transkullar Visualization Using Parameter Identification.

Abstract

The acoustic transmission characteristics of a three-layered medium with unknown parameters, and with only one exposed surface, are determined by solving a parameter identification problem for the medium. A comparison is made between the parameter identification problem for an electromagnetic medium and its acoustic counterpart. A possible application to ultrasonic probing of the human skull is investigated where previous transkulla probing methods had been unsuccessful. Extensive numerical results are included in the report. (Author)
