Large Windtunnels: Required Characteristics and the Performance of Various Types of Transonic Facility,

Abstract

The report comprises a number of papers, mostly based on lectures in a course on large transonic windtunnels. The first two discuss Reynolds number, flow quality and run time requirements for future aerodynamic testing facilities. The next two are concerned with two possible types of transonic testing facility, the Ludwieg-tube and hydraulic-piston storage. The following paper investigates the relative merits of various types of drive system. A paper develops further the survey of transonic windtunnel wall constraint that was presented in a formal AGARD report. Finally a paper develops part of the discussions concerning morphology of the various options for a new transonic tunnel, the further information needed, and details of the design specification.
