Reinforced Thermoplastics.

Abstract

The report contains the results of a research program to identify the properties of a series of continuous unidirectional fiber reinforced thermoplastic matrices. Graphite fibers with a modulus of 30 million psi and 60 million psi and Kevlar 49 fibers were employed, and the matrices were nylon, polycarbonate, noryl, polysulfone, and polyphenylquinoxaline. Prepregs were formed and then pressed into panels of approximately .090 inch thickness. Testing which was performed included fiber content, composite density, C-scan evaluation, flexural strength and modulus, horizontal short beam shear strength, and Izod impact strength. The latter two properties were determined before and after environmental exposure. These properties are compared to the properties generated with epoxy matrices. (Author)
