Sealed Primary Lithium-Inorganic Electrolyte Cell.
Abstract
Compatibility of twenty different metals and alloys with the inorganic electrolyte comprising 1.5(M) LiAlCl4-SOCl2 were determined by refluxing the materials at 85C (185F) for approximately one month. All the materials including Ni, Mo and Ta were found to be compatible except Ni-clad steel. The steel portion was dissolved from the exposed sides of the sample leaving the Ni foil intact. This indicated that completely covered Ni-clad or Ni-plated steel may still be compatible. Of the various insulating materials tested in the above manner, only Teflon, Kel-F and glass were found to be compatible. Optimization of the system was carried out in a factorial experiment. The data showed that cells with 1(M) electrolyte made in our laboratory and with 10% Teflon in the cathode performed the best. Pressure build-up studies were carried out in a modified 'C' cell and it was found that pressure build-up should not pose any significant problem in the cell design. (Modified author abstract)
