The Effect of Drugs on Vision.

Abstract

A number of compounds are available in Germany and France that are reported to improve night vision, reduce susceptibility to glare, and reduce eye strain. The original agent was an extract of bilberries (Vaccinium Myrtillus) and is an anthocyanoside. This compound was originally sold under the trade name 'pourpranyl' by Chilbret Laboratories, an affiliate of Merck, Sharp and Dohme. The product is now called 'difrarel'. The series of studies reported are not definite in the sense that they do not report the effects of 'difrarel' on dark adaptation for human consumption in the U.S.A. so an indirect approach to the problem was necessary. These investigations were designed to determine if there was a visible effect on the retina, if there was any effect on at least one factor of photopic vision and if the effects reported in the literature were in fact different than the effects of alcohol, a depressant.
