High Temperature Test Facility for Repeated Pressure Loading of Cylinders.

Abstract

Experimental results on selected candidate materials for rapid fire small arms gun barrels are presented. Short cylindrical test specimens fabricated from the candidate materials are subjected to repeated loadings under high temperatures and pressures. The loading rates ranged from 480 to 600 cycles per minute and the pressures from 309.2 to 446.7 MN/m squared. The test temperatures were 260C, 538C, and 816C. Materials tested were a nickel-cobalt alloy Udimet 700, an iron-nickel alloy CG27, a tool steel H-11, and the conventional gun barrel material Cr-Mo-V. (Author)
