A Sequential Counting Procedure for Estimating the Total Number of Randomly Distributed Individuals.

Abstract

When large populations of small objects of similar size are to be counted, they are often spread (randomly) over a regular surface which is divided into equal areas. The proposed scheme may be used to obtain an estimate of the total number of these objects with specified precision (approximately), but after only a partial count. Approximate expressions are obtained for the first two moments of the estimate, and for the expected sample size. (Author)
