Static Propensity of Navy Clothing.

Abstract

The Navy Clothing and Textile Research Unit (NCTRU) investigated the ability of static electrical discharges to ignite gaseous fuel/air mixtures. Brass points and spheres of various radii as well as human fingertips were used as electrodes. It was found that ignitions could readily be obtained from clothing-generated static electrical discharges even at quite moderate relative humidity levels. Pointed metallic electrodes produced ignitions at the lowest electrical discharge energy levels. (Modified author abstract)
