A Monte Carlo Approach to Some Problems Inherent in Multivariate Prediction: With Special Reference to Multiple Regression.

Abstract

The studies reported here are concerned with two general questions: (1) What is the best method for using available predictor data to make predictions about individuals in some population of individuals; and, (2) Given that a particular prediction method is used, what is the best way to estimate the level of predictive accuracy which the method will produce in the population. The studies are concerned with the conditions under which certain differential weighting methods for combining predictors into a composite (i.e., a predicted score) are better than others and the conditions under which specific estimation methods are better than others.
