Operation of Air Cathodes in the Presence of Hydrazine.

Abstract

The operational characteristics of air cathodes having either manganese dioxide or silver as the electrocatalyst have been studied in fuel-electrolyte mixtures typical of those encountered in hydrazine/air fuel cells. Manganese dioxide was found to react chemically with hydrazine while silver was found to catalytically decompose hydrazine to gaseous products. In addition the polarization at all electrodes tested was increased by the presence of hydrazine in the electrolyte. Sintered nickel proved to be a more suitable substrate for the electrocatalyst than activated carbon as it was less reactive with hydrazine. A microporous polypropylene separator material was found to greatly reduce the hydrazine concentration at the air cathode and thus decrease the cathode polarization. (Author)
