Optical Studies of Gd(3+) in the MeF2 Systems.

Abstract

The results of the continuation of the studies of the spectra of the octet S--sextet P and sextet I transitions of Gd(3+) MeF2 (Me = Ca, Sr, Ba) at 77 and 300 K are reported. Emphasis is on the detailed measurement of the absorption and fluorescence spectra associated with the (sextet P(7/2)) and the B(sextet P(5/2)) groups in two differently prepared SrF2 samples containing nominally 0.5 mole % Gd(3+) and in a SrF2 sample containing nominally 5 mole % Gd(3+). A minimum of three axial sites plus the cubic site are suggested present in the 0.5 mole % samples. (Author)
