Surface Structure and Applied Stress in Corrosion Rate.
Abstract
A device was built that permits the detection and location of the local potential fields set up by local action currents in the solution adjacent to a corroding metal surface. These potentials are measured and correlated to the local action current for developing pits on type 304 stainless steel samples anodically polarized to the pitting range in 2% NaCl solutions. This correlation was obtained by integrating the peak potentials with time and plotting the integrated values against corresponding pit volume. A linear correlation was obtained over a range where pits were small enough that no secondary pits were observed in the vicinity. A chemical analysis of surfaces in and around pits indicated slective dissolution of Ni during the early growth of pits. Atomic absorption analysis of the test solutions was in agreement with the chemical analysis of the sample surfaces. (Modified author abstract)
