Exploratory Development of Glare- and Noise-Reduction for Helicopter Rotor Blades.

Abstract

An exploratory investigation was conducted into a novel approach for the reduction of the visible signature of helicopter rotor blades. It is shown, through experimental results, on static models that the pattern of specular reflection (optical signature) can be modified to reduce the percentage of forward light scatter. However a moving surface wave along a simulated rotor blade was not obtained. Based upon research into previous work, there are several methods of achieving this phenomena in addition to the basic methods studied. The theoretical work investigated indicated that the application of the concept to reduce the optical signature will also reduce the audio signature. (Author)
