A Unified Finite Element Approach to Columns Subjected to Nonconservative Loads, with Damping Effects and Various End Conditions.
Abstract
Using the concept of unconstrained field variables, a general adjoint variational principle is formulated for columns subject to nonconservative loads and with various end conditions. External damping as well as material damping are also included in the same formulations. Emanating from this variational principle, finite element techniques have been developed to include problems with a wide variety of end conditions of the column by simply varying the values of several parameters. These end parameters represent the degrees of flexibility, of damping, and the amount of tip mass, etc. Thus the critical loads of stability of the column structure can be determined for any of the load-end condition combinations using the same formulations and hence the same computer programs. Numerical results are presented here for several combinations of parameters. (Author-PL)
