On Increasing Vertical Efficiency of a Passive Balloon Tracking Device by Optimal Choice of Release Point.

Abstract

For a rawinsonde employing the AN/GMD-1B rawinset, it is shown that ability to supply vertical wind velocity profiles is dependent on balloon release point. For the family of balloon trajectories considered, as horizontal wind speed increases, gains in system performance by optimal choice of release point become of increasing significance. The analysis and results presented are based on the form of isovariant surfaces for a family of estimators of horizontal balloon displacement derived from fundamental system observables.
