On Bounding Moments from Group Data.

Abstract

In the course of a study of income inequality one of the authors obtained bounds on the mean difference of a distribution from data grouped in intervals where the mean of each group is given. The present paper generalizes these results and derives upper and lower bounds to moments of the form the integral of h(x)dF(x) where h(x) is convex and F(x) is concave. This last assumption is useful in studying income data since the density function underlying the income distribution decreases in the upper tail.
