Calibration and Modifications of the Magnetic Float Pycnometer

Abstract

An automatic 'hands-off' magnetic float pycnometer developed in this laboratory was applied in preliminary research to determine the partial specific volume of polymer in solution. During this phase of the research it became obvious that the original calibration was not adequate. To improve this technique a few modifications have been made, by adding a new digital ammeter and by replacing part of the homemade electronics with a commercial phase lock- in amplifier. Then a new comprehensive calibration was performed and all parameters required to characterize the apparatus and the float were determined. Finally, partial specific volume of the polymer polystyrene in cyclohexane was investigated by applying the new magnetic float pycnometry and also by using the conventional technique.
