Diesel Stern Drives for Utility Boats.

Abstract

A standard 30-foot Coast Guard Utility boat was modified to evaluate the feasibility of using a Diesel powered stern drive unit to improve the handling characteristics of this type of boat. Endurance tests were conducted on a standard commercially available stern drive unit to determine its suitability for Coast Guard use and to provide design criteria for future utilization of stern drives. Standardization trails were performed for comparison of performance with conventional utility boats. A noise level survey was carried out to determine whether the stern drive with an underwater exhaust system was significantly quieter than conventional boats. (Modified author abstract)
