Running Gear of Cross-Country Vehicles,

Abstract

Various designs of cross-country running gear are discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of tracks, half-tracks, standard-wheeled vehicles, wide-profile wheeled ones, air rollers, and roller tracks are examined and comparison made for operations on soft soils, snow, sand and in some cases on the water. Comparisons are made from viewpoints of relative initial cost, service life, speed and load capacity, with specific pressure on the surface traversed being the primary criterion for cross-country performance.
