Study of the Use of Charge-Coupled Devices (CCD's) in Analog Signal Processing Systems.

Abstract

The first section of the report describes charge-coupled device (CCD) characteristics such as signal input and output, tap weighting, frequency response, dispersion, dynamic range, linearity, clocking, etc. This is followed by a discussion of basic CCD building blocks (i.e., series in/series out (SI/SO), series in/parallel out (SI/PO), and parallel in/series out (PI/SO)) for discrete analog signal processing (DASP) in which discrete analog samples are transported with an electrically alterable time delay and analog weighted. DASP is contrasted with conventional digital signal processing (DSP) in the remainder of the report and illustrations are presented from representative systems, such as radar, sonar, and communications, to indicate the dramatic savings in cost, weight and volume, and power. A section of the report is devoted to transversal filters and the effects of tap weights and tap weight errors on filter response. (Modified author abstract)
