On the Necessary Number and Optimum Location of Fiducial Marks in an Aerial Photographic Appearance,

Abstract

Studies on the optimum number and location of fiducial marks in an aerial photographic apparatus showed that it is possible to obtain minimum residual distortions of the coordinates and altitude distortions when 16 fiducial marks are used, and when the non-linear technique is used for calculating the distortions. When the non-linear technique of calculating distortions is adopted, using eight marks along the perimeter at a distance of 8 cm from each other, the residual errors will amount to plus or minus 0.010 mm on the photograph surface and to 1/7,000 to 1/11,000H in the altitude. If the number of fiducial marks on the perimeter of the picture is increased above 16, this will not increase the precision of determination of the coordinates.
