Calculation of Wave Loads on Underground Structures,

Abstract

A previous paper examine the problem of the interaction of a shock wave in a plastic medium (soil) with a structure, with consideration of the latter's deformations. A solution was found by assuming that there are two stages of interaction: (1) when the reflected wave is a shock wave and unloading of the medium occurs behind the wave front; (2) when the stress surge on the front of the reflected wave disappears and all of the soil, in accordance with the plastic medium model applied to it, begins to move as incompressible soil. In the present investigation it is shown that in addition to the two interaction stages mentioned, still others are possible, which must be examined to determine the maximum structure deformations.
