High Sensitivity Millimeter and Infrared Radiometric Receiver.

Abstract

An MMIC (millimeter-microwave-integrated-circuit) mixer has been developed for use at Ka-band. This mixer incorporates high quality beam leaded GaAs Schottky diodes, bonded to a thin low-dielectric constant substrate, which contains the mixer hybrid and associated filtering circuits. The RF and LO ports of the substrate are probe coupled to waveguide for mating with conventional K sub a-band waveguide components. When combined with a 500 MHz bandwidth IF amplifier, having a 2.5 db noise figure, this mixer yielded an overall double sideband noise figure of 5.8 db to 6.0 db, with an LO at 37.5 GHz. This combination of noise figure and bandwidth yields state-of-the-art radiometric sensitivity. This MMIC mixer is ideally suited for applications where low cost, light weight and small volume are required. (Author)
