Elastic Recovery Test for Elastomers.

Abstract

A fixture was designed and tested for use in measuring the elastic recovery of elastomeric vulcanizates at elevated temperatures in gaseous or liquid media. Elastic recovery was determined in air and in ASTM no. 3 oil at ambient and at elevated temperatures on vulcanizates based on high strength silicone, fluorosilicone and butadiene/acrylonitrile. Results showed that the compression set of the silicone vulcanizate in air was dependent on state of cure, test time and temperature, applied compression and amount of air circulation in the vicinity of the specimens. Elastic properties of the materials are discussed and compared. (Modified author abstract)
