Absorption and Emission Band Shapes of Thermally and Optically Excited Ions and Molecules.

Abstract

The vibrational interaction between an ion and its surrounding configuration strongly influences the absorption and emission spectra that characterize electronic transitions within the ion. The resulting vibrationally assisted electronic absorption and emission spectra are dependent on two parameters: the Huang-Rhys factor and the quadratic-interaction parameter. These dependences are examined in detail, and simple methods are developed that facilitate the determination of these theoretical parameters from experimental data. These methods are then applied to a specific experimental example (Cr(2+) in ZnS). The method of moments is considered in detail. (Modified author abstract)
