Epidemiology and Serology of Typhoid Fever Including Survey on 'Salmonella' in Korea.

Abstract

Patients suspected of enteric infections were studied bacteriologically, and it was found that typhoid fever is still prevalent throughout the year in Taegu city with increasing incidences from May through November. Rectal swabs collected from workers associated with food services during the period from June to October of 1973 were subjected for the isolation of enteric pathogens, and Salmonella paratyphi B and Shigella were identified in July but not in the other months. S. typhi was not isolated. S. typhi isolated during 1971 and 1973 was tested for the sensitivity to antimicrobial agents, and most of them were found to be highly sensitive to chloramphenicol, tetracycline, ampicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, kanamycin, polymyxin B and colistin and loss sensitive to streptomycin, sulfisomidine and nalidixic acid.
