Buckling Experiments on Small-Scale Plastic Models of the GRP Minehunter Bottom Structure,

Abstract

Results are presented of buckling experiments on four small-scale plastic models representing the bottom structure of the prototype GRP minehunter WILTON. Compression tests on two flat panels with transverse top-hat frames confirmed theoretical predictions of an unfamiliar form of instability, previously overlooked in design, and demonstrated that structural collapse would occur at loads close to theoretical critical values. Tests on two further models, one representing the complete ship's vee-bottom structure and the other a full three-dimensional ship compartment, provided further verification of theory and demonstrated that boundary conditions assumed in design, as adopted in flat panel tests, were safe without being unduly conservative.
