Application of Pattern Recognition to the Evaluation of Acute Care,

Abstract

There is a growing need to evaluate the new and innovative methods now being used and planned for in the treatment of an increasing number of severely injured and acutely ill patients. Toward this end this paper presents a methodology for characterizing severity of traumatic states using physiological and biochemical measures together with pattern recognition techniques. Consideration will eventually be given to defining prognosis regions, probabilities of survival, and trajectories of patients. All of these factors are used in assessing the results of care.
