The Precorneal Tear Film: Breakup Time and Location in Normal Subjects.

Abstract

Tear film breakup time (BUT) and location were determined in 100 young men. BUT ranged from 10 seconds to over 60 seconds. The desiccated locations were randomly distributed over the entire corneal surface and appeared most often temporally or inferiorly as a dot or a streak. The BUT and location test has application in clinical practice in determining the etiology of complaints of dry eyes and potential value in studying the effects of ophthalmic solutions and irritants on the eye.
