Ionic Activity in Molten Salts,

Abstract

On the basis of a complex model proposed earlier for the structure of molten salts, ionic activity was calculated in a molten mixture containing several kinds of ions. Systems with the same anion and two or three types of cations were considered in detail. It was shown that the systems do not behave ideally if the cations differ noticeably in their capacity to form complexes. On the basis of the formulas obtained for the ionic activity, the equilibrium potentials of the metallic and chlorine electrodes were calculated for several galvanic elements with molten salt electrolytes under the assumption that there was no diffusion potential in the diaphragm.
