On the Nature of the Induction Period of Development,

Abstract

It is usually assumed that the reducing potential in the developing solution and the layer of film being developed is the same. However, data shows that in reality the developer's composition in the layer can differ significantly from its composition in the solution. Experiments were set up to determine the speed of the developer's penetration into the layer. It was concluded that the length of the induction period of development is linked to the pH of the developing solution and with a 'critical' value of the developing agent's oxidation-reduction potential.
