Learning the Parameters of Complex Sounds with the Aid of a Computer,
Abstract
Forty seven naval ratings learnt to classify eight synthetic whines with the aid of a simulated computer. The whines had to be classified on the three dimensions of fundamental frequency, modulation, and band-pass filter setting. For one group of ratings the computer was programmed to make errors like the errors of a reference group which practiced always without computer aid. For another group of ratings the computer was programmed to perform less well than the refernce group on the easy dimension of fundamental frequency, and better than the reference group on the difficult dimension of bandpass filter setting. The results indicate the effectiveness of training with computer aid, even when the computer is unable to make the needed processing.
