Design of a High-Speed Nonelectric Detonator Loading, Assembly, Inspection, and Packaging System

Abstract

The report presents bench-model verification of the feasibility of producing M55 nonelectric detonators at a rate of 1,200 per minute, using live powder, in the following areas: metering of charges, consistency of charge weight, loading of charges, consolidation of charges, crimping, and elimination of powder bridging. The report also presents a final, overall system design incorporating practical improvements. The fully automated system includes the following features: bulk feeding cups, variable volume metering, safety during metering, elimination of propagation of explosion to metering hopper during consolidation, seal blanking and inserting, rapid tooling changeover to accommodate other sizes, and packaging of finished detonators.
