An Epidemiologic and Immunologic Study of Boutonneuse Fever in Israel.

Abstract

Sera from cases of suspected rickettsioses were tested by fluorescent antibody (FA) and complement fixation (CF). FA revealed many more past and present infections than CF. Spotted fever (SF) infections were more numerous and widespread than in previous years. One strain of SF rickettsiae, isolated from ticks from a hedgehog, was antigenically similar to 4 of the 5 strains previously isolated in Israel. Washed particulate antigens were prepared from the locally isolated strains and from taxonomically defined strains of SF rickettsiae. CF and FA tests were done versus sera from guinea pigs, mice and rabbits immunized against the various rickettsiae. No one serum differentiated among R.conori, R.siberica and the local strains, but it was shown that conori and siberica are antigenically different from each other and from all the local isolates. Of the 6 local isolates, 5 were antigenically similar while one differed from all the other rickettsiae used. (Modified author abstract)
