Exploratory Tests of a Curved-Crystal X-Ray Spectrograph for Diagnostics of the Casino Spectrum.
Abstract
Exploratory tests were carried out with the curved-crystal spectrograph and tantalum foil targets using the 1 MeV electron Van de Graaff and the Gamble I facilities. Characteristic Ta K alpha lines were readily observable with 0.1 Coulomb irradiation on the electron Van de Graaff or with one shot on Gamble I. Good Ta bremsstrahlung spectra required longer exposures as would be expected; faster film intensifying screens would reduce exposure requirements by two to five times. Ancillary tests included a balanced-filter experiment to measure Ta characteristic radiation independently of the crystal spectrograph and the use of secondary fluorescers excited by primary x-rays from the Ta target.
