Underwater Applications of Acousto-Optical Imaging

Abstract

The results of experiments and analyses completed during Phase 2 concerning the performance of the TRW acousto-optical imaging system are presented. The ultimate sensitivity of the system is reviewed from a theoretical viewpoint and it is shown that the theoretical limit for the system is an echo intensity of about -60 dB relative to a micro bar. Experiments were carried out substantiating theoretical predictions. Thus system sensitivity is considerably better than earlier believed. Laboratory experiments on resolution and field of view were carried out with an acoustic reflector in place. Resolution somewhat better than twice the theoretical limit was observed.
