Product Improvement of M13Al Filter Elements - Metal Edgeseal.

Abstract

The M13Al Filter Element Product Improvement Program was initiated to improve storage stability of the filter element. Early studies determined that performance after storage was poor primarily because of the plastisol edgeseal. New edgeseal materials and designs were investigated to correct this problem. Several metal edgeseal designs were fabricated and compared to the standard M13Al filter element for gas life, rough-handling capability, high temperature aging capability, water adsorption capacity, dioctyl phthalate (DOP) penetration, airflow resistance, and comfort during troop trials. A large number of failures occurred on all metal designs. The primary cause of leakage was the inability of the metal edgeseal to attach securely to the laminate and to flex with the laminate during rough handling. Wearing problems resulted because the elements could not conform to different facial features, and increased mask fogging resulted from the larger thermal conductivity of the metal.
