Investigations to Improve the Growth of Quality Verneuil and Chalcogenide Crystals.

Abstract

This final technical report deals with the synthesis and characterization of a variety of materials specifically cubic boronphosphide, cubic boron nitride, diamond, sapphire, and ruby, europium sulfide and the chalcogenides of cadmium. Characterization has been in terms of spectra, electrical conductivity, thermal neutron detection, morphology and thermal stability. A mathematical and thermodynamic model of the flame fusion crystal growth process has been developed. Polymorphism has been fundamentally reviewed, yielding a relationship which gives transition pressures in terms of traditional thermodynamic quantities. Further fundamental and spectral studies deal with solid solution hardening, compressibility and cold neutron spectra of solids.
