Models of Short-Term Memory: A Critical Review.
Abstract
Recent models of short-term memory are critically reviewed for their possible applicability to training techniques. Although many of the models provide reasonable ad hoc descriptions of memory data, none of them allow for an a priori quantitative prediction. At a qualitative level they say no more than the empirical phenomena indicate qualitatively. This may not be a serious lack from the viewpoint of the purposes for which the models were developed, but it does provide a lack from the viewpoint of use for training. Suggestions are made toward further research and toward the possibility of developing models aimed at specific classes of training.
