Investigation of Suppression Devices to Stabilize Combustion in Solid Rocket Motors.

Abstract

A program was conducted to investigate suppression devices for stabilization of combustion in solid rocket motors. The program encompassed tests with both aluminized and smokeless propellants to screen various devices and scaling of the most promising device for large motor tests (6 to 10 in. dia). In laboratory screening and small scale motor tests the devices evaluated included: single orifice, multi-orifice, and configured (finocyl) baffles designed to be placed within the motor before propellant casting; cantilevered baffles supported from one end designed for retrofit into existing motors; and, various resonators (acoustic absorbers) also designed for easy retrofit to existing motors.
