Dye Testing and Evaluation Program.

Abstract

Optimization of the performance of laser dyes emitting in the range from 590 nm to 750 nm is investigated in the proprietary vortex stabilized flashlamp pumped dye laser developed by United Aircraft Research Laboratory. The long life and extremely repeatable output characteristics of the flashlamp permit an extended investigation for the purpose of comparing the performance of twenty dye-solvent combinations. The dyes evaluated were rhodamine 6G, rhodamine B, Kiton Red S, and cresyl violet nitrate which were prepared in a pure form by the Air Force Materials Laboratory. Another dye evaluated was Eastman Kodak No. 11885, oxazine perchlorate. Degradation tests were performed on the most efficient dye solvent combinations to determine their suitability for sustained operation. (Author)
