Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics and Electromagnetic Theory.

Abstract

Research is reported in the following areas: A mathematical foundation for thermodynamics, the thermodynamics of discrete mechanical systems with memory, thermodynamics and the stability of motions of materials with memory, fading memory and functional-differential equations, the initial value problem for a class of functional-differential equations, the integral equations of the linear theory of recurrent lateral interaction in vision, the theory of delayed lateral inhibition in the compound eye, the consequences of delayed lateral inhibition in the retina, including the elementary theory of spatially uniform fields and the theory of spatially uniform fields assuming the 4-point property, the theory of induced birefringence in materials with memory, thermodynamic restrictions on the constitutive equations of electromagnetic theory, retardation theorems, and a mathematical theory of lateral sensory inhibition.
